Get him something useful and small that shows that you know what he likes. It should be something that would remind him of you when he uses it (ie If you two like making sushi together, get him a nice pair of chopsticks)

4 months nothing over 20 bucks... i would stick with something childishly fun! to bring out the kid in ya! or some sweet hand held arcade game!!

if he's got a car, car accssories are ALWAYS good! like trick pedals or a cool shifter, or something.
socks are good too, but maybe he's not old enogh to appriciate that yet. (when you move out of your folks house, you really start to like getting SOCKS!!)
