It depends where you live. In the u.k. there are ferret rescues.A local breeder, has 30 babies at the moment, she will charge about £10.00.Please buy a book on Ferrets, this will answer a lot of your questions. Both sexes smell. This is reduced by a de-scenting operation, where the scent glands are removed.
The females have problems unless spayed, or repeatedly used for breeding. They make wonderful pets if handled from young, and are very entertaining.

Ferrets have a distinct odor. The majority of pet store ferrets are descented, meaning they had their scent gland removed at the time they were spayed/neutered, but ferrets will always have a slight musky odor that can be minimized. Keeping the bedding, the cage, the hammocks and the litter boxes clean helps. Scoop the litter at least twice daily and wash the litter box once a week. Wash all surfaces in the cage once a week. I use washable bedding, aka old t-shirts and change them once a week or as needed. Keeping the ferrets ears clean and bathing them no more than once a month(not week) helps as well. Bathing them more often actually worsens the problem as it strips the musk oils from their bodies in turn making them itchy. The glands then go into overdrive to replace the oils and the ferret gets smellier faster.
I don't mind their smell, actually one of mine smells a bit like corn chips, especially when he's sleeping.
As far as cost goes, they are anywhere from $90.00 to about $150.00 around here, but kind of hard to come by, as a lot of pet stores in my area are no longer doing business with Marshall Farms and some of the other breeders were having problems supplying enough kits. I adopted half of my bunch and I found them through http://www.petfinder.com and I'm glad I did.
Please make sure you learn as much as you can about them. They are labor intensive and time consuming but well worth it.
They can also run up quite the vet bill in their life.
I recommend "Ferrets for Dummies", it's a good book full of good info and just funny sometimes. Good luck, hope this helped.

The cost of just the ferret itself is going to be between $100 and $200 but that is the cheapest part of buying a ferret. You are going to need a large cage, litter boxes, litter, food and water bowls, high quality food, toys, hammocks, ear cleaner, dental cleaner, ferritone, treats, ferret lax (for when they shed and if they eat something dangerous), ingredients for duck soup, and the list goes on. You will spend at least $300 on the start up costs alone. Then it will need to go to the vet for a checkup and get it's rabies/distemper vaccinations. After that you should have about $500 per ferret saved up for medical emergencies. Then their is the constant cost of food, litter, replacing toys, and cleaning products (natures miracle and paper towels). Ferrets are very expensive pets!!!

They average around $150 here, and Huh?'s answer pretty much sums up the odor thing. Also, I've found a dry kitten shampoo at walmart for about $2, and use it just about every day, because my husband doesn't like the 'musky' odor. It keeps him smelling pretty dern good between wet baths. =)

100 to 150 dollars. They do have a distinct smell to them. It is something you cannot get rid of but you can keep the odor down by cleaning the cage everyday and washing him/her once a week. They are fun pets if you can handle the smell and work involved with having one..
