We are considering moving there...

The rule of thumb this year is to evacuate within 50 miles of the coast. Katy is much further inland. You will get strong winds, rain, and possibly tornadoes if a hurricane were a direct hit on Galveston/Houston. A typical Spring thunderstorm around here can produce the same. Tornadoes are rare. Hurricanes should not be a factor when considering your move. I live within 45 miles of the coast and we don't worry about it at all. I will tell you that there was a news bit on TV about a month ago, talking about gangs becoming a problem in Katy, but every area will have gangs to some extent. Katy is a growing area so be sure and check out the school district, I-1o road construction and flooding, housing costs etc. Other places to consider if your looking for small town atmosphere on the north side of Houston would be Spring, and on the south side but closer to the coast would be Sugar Land (no mandatory evacuation), Pearland (west side--no mandatory evacuation), Friendswood (mandatory evacuation). I saw in the newspaper where Pearland and Friendswood school districts had received a recognized rating from the state. Only 11 school districts in the Houston area received this rating. Well this is more than you ask for but hope it helps.

Katy, Texas is 65 miles from the coast and if a hurricane would hit Galveston/Houston area Katy would only receive rain. though hurricane Rita did not hit Galveston as predicted Katy received only a light sprinkle and some wind. Katy is a perfect place to live not too far from Houston, yet has quiet and peaceful neighborhoods.

May get some thunderstorms like any other place in Texas.

Could experience some heavy winds if a hurricane were near Houston.

If a hurricane hit, you would get wind and rain but probably not much damage. It's an hour's drive from the coast, and is not included in the Houston area's mandatory hurricane evacuations.

it is going to hit around houston,Galveston, mexico, Louisiana, and probable alabama. the 1st area of the hurricane is going to hit particularly quickly. It has already long gone over the Galveston sea wall. The winds in Galveston in the previous at present have been a hundred and five miles in keeping with hour. it is going to ruin maximum of Galveston. in case you reside in Galveston evacuate or face particular death. there is likewise a extensive hearth coming from a storage area. Firefighters cant get to the hearth so they're in basic terms letting it burn.

You won't get direct hit but you will get LOTS of wind and rain, possible flooding, and also tornadoes.

BUT houses are cheap - 4 bedroom house for $80,000 can't beat that anywhere - and schools are great.

Katy is BORING but if you are raising kids and don't mind feeling a bit trapped then it's fine for you..

Yes, but it must have to be one helluva hurricane to survive that far inland. Trust me, you have nothing to be afraid about.
