No. You're right.
People everywhere have been duped.
I saw a show on this very subject. The water you pay for in all those plastic bottles, come from the same water plant as the water you get from your kitchen sink.
They just draw off the water from the plant, in the city, where they are located. Can you say "RIP OFF?"
I just buy a bottle now and then and reuse it.
I fill it up from my kitchen sink.
They taste identical because they are.
They are sticking us with the cost of their advertising and packaging and their liscence and insurance, shipping, etc.
Geesh.
On this show, I watched, they blindfolded people who SWORE, that the bottled water tasted better. They let them sip from the bottled water(which was pourn into a glass and THEN, sampled the tap water(in a glass).
Most of the people picked the tap water, from their own kitchen sink, as the better tasting one. Funny!
They were shocked when they found out.
We are talking about some seriously impressionable people here.
The appearance of the bottles, sends a message to the brain, that says..."Oh! This bottled water is MUCH better.
Pitiful.
p.s.....Is that you, in your avatar or Johnny Depp?
EitherWAY! I'm in love! Hot hot hot. Whewwww!

Ho, I'm in Australian- water can be very precious here - but I'll try and answer as generically as I can.
Yes, water can have a cost. It just depends. Bottling it or collecting it costs someone time and money. The Company that sells it made sure it is clean and provided the bottle deserves something for their time. Even water that comes out of a tap made it somehow from the catchment reservoir (or well or whatever) through cleaning process (if any) the mains pipeworks (more costs) to the tap. However tap water cost only a few cents per thousand litres - most of the costs goes to the bottles and distribution.

Until I owned my own home and had a monthly water/sewage bill, I thought it was free also, but apparently it's about $20-$40 a month depending on how much I water my lawn. I'll pay an extra $5 for a case of water that doesn't taste like the local river.

Water is not free, unless you live on a stream, and even then there are limits to how much you may use. Commercially bottled water entails costs for obtaining the water, refining and purifying it, packaging it, and getting it to market, so it costs a fair amount of money.

No, you're not wrong.
In fact, ever notice what the bottled water Evian spells backwards? NAIVE---that's referring to their customers.
Another tidbit of information, I do know for a FACT that the water botttling companies (such as Evian, Mountain Water, etc.) have contacted local water companies asking to purchase water from them. In other words, water straight from your tap is the exact same as what's in the little cute plastic containers.

You might be wise to filter your 'free' water though.
Many real studies have proven bottled water to be no better than tap water. No less full of bacteria.
To be fair, the quality of tap water does change greatly with your location.
Search for blind water tasing, pitting tap water against bottled water. Also search for tests for their contents.
As stated in my first statement, buy a water filter, replace the filter often.
