Nuclear energy can be used for power or destruction. Why are Muslims so focused on blame? Do you want to blame the US for nuking Japan which caused Japan to surrender and end WWII? Or is the issue of blame a prelude to Iran (via Hezbollah) nuking Haifa on Aug 22 or whenever?

The US. A British national who was working as a double agent supplying spies to the Soviets got a hold of America's nuclear secrets and gave them to the Russians. Information from that spy and a few others lead to the Russians forming their own nuclear program and truly starting the Cold War.
I often wonder how world history would have evolved if the US would have done what many scholars suggested and either A) Stop producing nuclear weapons and form an international treaty banning them worldwide or B)Turning over the nukes to the UN or another international body and again forming an international treaty banning their possession by any other countries. Food for thought

The research was originally started in Europe specifically in England with Rutherford and in Germany. The splitting of the atom was turned into a nuclear weapon by the USA.

Dani has it right. Einstein laid the ground work but couldn't figure out how to get past the "break even point" until his friend stepped in they were in the same quandry that we are now regarding nuclear fusion.
