Here's what I use and recommend and there all free.
If you find anything they can't remove you can ask questions on there website forums for more information. (but I have never needed it)
FIRST REMOVE
"errordoctor" it gets VERY LOW ratings on www.cnet.com

I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)<--English version

AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

You don't indicate which operating system you're using so I'll guess Windows. Obviously, you're looking for a free solution but I would also suggest trying to find one which is effective and easy to use. People have recommended some good ones. Others will identify problems, but not fix them. Also bear in mind most companies with paid products will offer you a trial package.

The point I'm trying to emphasize is the best package is one you find easy to use and effective. Regardless of price, if you don't find a solution easy to use, it's of little value. This is why I suggest broadening your requirements so you at least see the full feature set of all products even if it means spending some dollars.

One free option I've not seen mentioned is Microsoft's Live Window's Safety Center. The product is still in beta but does offer some nice services. Best if you have a broadband connection.

Yahoo has a pretty good spyware zapper on their toolbar... its that radar looking thingy next to the pop up blocker... Also adaware from lavasoft and spyware search and destroy are also good options.

Interestingly enough, while its not ok to have more than one virus checker, you should have more than one spyware checker as one isn't sufficient enough to catch all the nasties out there.

You can download the updates from the microsoft websites. They have some powerful antispys and spam fighters.

And also you can download the latest version of Yahoo! toolbar. The antispy provided by Yahoo is pretty strong.

And also use the EZ armour and EZ trust anti-virus if you're looking for something free. Go to www.oldversion.com to get all of it.

Good luck.
