1. Go to http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com/as/.
2. Click the "have a specialist contact you" link.
3. Fill out the form, including contact information. Just make up whatever you like other than the phone number, which should be yours.

4. A Yahoo Employee will call you, expecting you to spend money to advertise on Yahoo. When they do (which will be during the business week, during the day) tell the person you need to report the death of a Yahoo Member and were unaware of any other way to reach a live person there, and ask for the correct phone number.

5. Have a certified copy of the death certificate ready to mail or Fax to Yahoo, along with a copy of any legal documents have you naming you as an executor of the deceased's will, documents you have naming you as someone with legal authority to act on behalf of the deceased, etc. Fax those to where ever the Yahoo lawyers tell you and they will release the information.

I don't work for Yahoo, but there is no way they will give out that information unless they have changed there policy.
More than a year ago I saw on the news where a family was trying to get there sons e-mail account because he was killed in Iraq.
Yahoo has a policy of NOT releasing account information to ANYONE except the account holder. So it made the news because they would NOT release it.
I haven't hears anything but if the parents are pursuing it, I'm sure it's still in the courts.
If you expect any wrong doing you can give any information you have to the police and the police, if they expect any wrong doing can get in to the account. BUT that info can not be legally released to you.
To avoid this in the future all we as users can do is place ALL account information in a safety deposit box or give to a lawyer to be opened in the event of our death.

If you know some of his personal information, I think you can go onto Yahoo and say you forgot your password...

And I'm very sorry for your loss.
