My daughter went into the 6th grade this year and she decided she wanted to be in the orchestra and play Violin which I support 110%... My delima is this.. Now after getting me all excited about her learning the violin she came home today to say that she wants to join the band and play the trombone. Well I do not want to push her into anything and I want it to be her decision but to be honest I would rather her learn the violin. What should I do? I just think that the violin would be a better choice because of all the doors that it could open for her but as I said I do not want to push her into anything.

Well i would tell her to try the one she originally started with, just for awhile. if after about 3 or 4 months she still feels like she wants to play the trombone then give her a shot at that. I have a sister that was in the band and she could play almost all the instruments in the band. (She is very indecisive)Also you could get the opinion of family!!! Considering they are the ones that have to sit through all the annoying performances (ha ha)

First of all, make sure that she is not changing her "tune" based on a boy in the band. If there's a cute little sixth grade boy playing the trombone, she may want to sit next to him.... just a thought.

I would have her carry a trombone around for a while and then carry a violin. Ask her which one she would rather lug to school on a regular basis.

Also -- make sure that she has a lip stamina that it takes to play the trombone. It takes a lot to make the trombone sound good.

Lastly, take her to the symphony and let her really study the violins and the trombones.

If she still wants to play the trombone -- let her try it. She's still young enough to switch to the violin if she changes her mind.

Good luck!

Has she already started lessons in violin? If so she has made a committment to learn that instrument. Perhaps she could try violin for one year and then trombone next year if she doesn't like violin. I play violin now but when I was in 7th grade I played the trombone and I found it very hard to reach the 7th position as you need very long arms for that.

i play the violin and i completely love it. of course, i didn't love it when i started but my family pushed me to keep going with it. now i can make some pocket money for playing at weddings and stuff. kids are gonna go from one hobby to the next without blinking an eye, but always buying instruments will get pretty pricy. kids want to dabble in so much that it will be horrendous for you. even though i know you don't want to push her into anything, i do think that the best you can do is to keep her playing the violin.

I'm not a mom, but personally, I think you should let her play the trombone, if that is what she truely wants. Once you buy one for her, and let her be in the orchestra, just let her know that she has to finish it before she changes her mind or something. If you get what i'm saying. I'm not sure if i made that very understandable or not.

Rock On,
Heather
