I have a question. At first this question will sound bad, but hear me out. Are the people you're talking about women?
Women and men have many differences. That is what makes us need each other. These differences extend to even our self-esteems.
Women base their self-esteem on comparison. They see a beautiful woman and believe that because that woman is beautiful, they must be ugly. The reverse is true as well. By saying/believing that another woman is ugly or fat, they can trick themselves into thinking that they are beautiful or thin. Advertisers prey on this weakness.
Truth is, we are what we are. It doesn't matter if there is a beautiful woman nearby, the woman is still who she is. Her worth did not change.
BTW - Men base their self-esteem on what they own or what they do.

It is because of our immaturity and ignorance. We are told what looks good and that is how we should look or else we're ugly and that idea is implanted in our brains even as kids. We really all need to learn to live our own lives and worry less about what others think of us based on shallow judgments. The more the mass media pulls in the more they spend and look like they have the perfect life, the more they're idolized. The best we can do is go against this ignorant cycle ourselves and raise our kids to do better too.

No - but if you look at the prevalence of ads and such, you're most likely going to find a rise in how many images of "pretty" people we see and "strive" to be. We have more advertisements now than ever before, and advertisers are always looking for the "best looking" people to represent them.
With that being a guideline for our television culture - you're going to have to expect more people making that conclusion than not.
Sad.

Obsession with physical attractiveness has been going on alot longer than MTV has existed. The standards for what is attractive have changed over the years, but physical attractiveness has always been emphasized

I suppose it matters to some people, but not everybody. If you find a different crowd to be around, you might not hear so much about looks. Actually, you'll always hear about it, but you might be able to find a group that cares about more than just that.
Good question.

Pretty much it. I get glowing letters from women about my answers, and then they disappear. Troglodite men are in, the one's women claim to hate. Stupid and sexy is in.
