Does it read commercial and blank CDs?

You may need to try removing it from Device Manager in Windows and reboot. Let Windows redetect it. The steps to get to Device Manager depend on the version of Windows you have. You can find info on the net. Just search on google.

If that doesn't help, you should uninstall, reboot and reinstall the burning software you use. After all that, the only other thing left to really do is move the CD burner to another PC to make sure it's not the burner itself. It may need replaced.

You can find them dirt-cheap these days. I recommend buying online at http://www.newegg.com where you will find them less than $30, or you can upgrade to a decent DVD burner for less than $70.

If the light does not come on at all , check to see if any internal connections have come loose ! If not you may need to get a new burner. Check for deals on ebay! It happens! If the light does come on, maybe you may have to get a new burner anyway. I once had a dvd player that still played cds but stopped playing dvds.If it is an older burner then yeah probably!

If your operating system can detect it in your file manager than must be something wrong with the optical inside your cd burner. If it doesn't exist in your file manager maybe the cables is not properly attached
