>All religion is mythology...even the "new ones". Scientology, to name one. We do, however, know that L. Ron Hubbard actually existed...that puts the Scientologists one up on the rest.<

what? people actually call old religions as mythology? i think you got it all mixed up. old religions shouldn't be mythology because it is a different matter altogether. Unless it is like those in the stories of Greeks, the Hera, Zeus religion thingies.

if you call Christianity mythology, you generally mean that it's not a true religion or that it's origin isn't true or can't be traced and that it didn't actually happen in history, that it's just a make believe thing that people just made up because they do not know the origin. that basically is what mythology means.

Because the ruler to which we judge religions now has changed. All major religions (ok not counting Hindi) is monotheistic, while most "old" religions are polytheistic and therefore "wrong" by our new standards.
You must also remember that Christianity and Islam both have roots in Judaism which is as old as some mythology, so be careful in calling "old" religions mythology.

Mythology = sets of stories.

Religion = set of beliefs, practices, symbols, and worldviews.

Mythology is a part of religion. Anybody who calls an old religion mythology doesn't know what they are talking about. The Greek religion was a religion. The Greek mythology was part of the Greek religion.

Mythology is used for ancient religions because "myth" denotes a story used to explain natural events. For instance, ancient greeks couldn't have known that the sun was a flaminhg ball that we revolve around, so they came up with the story of the sun was a chariot pulled by the sun god. The main reasons christianity isn't called mythology is becuase it doesn;t explain natural events (except the creation) and becuase calling it mythology would offend people.

Because no one believes them any more. After all, have you ever heard of a person, in this day and age, making an offering to Zeus...or some such thing?
Calling something a "mythology" is tantamount to admitting that it's a human-made story (ie: it's not true), so people only call things "mythology" when they don't believe it.

And I, for one, DO call christianity "mythology".

Myths are defined as sacred stories.

therefore, the bible -is- a myth, just like stories of ragnarok, the greek gods and the titans etc.

Its not just old religions that are mythology.

Um, princezcruz, I hate to tell you this, but nobody "made up" Mohammed before Jesus was born. Islam got started after Christianity. I don't know the exact date but I think it was around 600 or 700 AD.

Responding to princescruz:

A lot of people today believe in Mohammed and Buddha. What gives you the right to say that they're not real? How do you know that they're not real? Your statement is reflective of a lot of naivete and prejudice.

They call it mythology because Jesus Christ was not born yet and people just made up things like Buddaha, Mohomid, and Zues, Hercules....Get the picture? Christianity is totally not mythology. it is a reality, christ lives and you should go to church.
