768 is usually the standard width now. Make the length how every long you want. But remember, you want your most important content in the fold of the page if possible.

If you are making your image in photoshop, make sure that you optimize the picture in imageready. Do it enough that it still holds the integrity of your design. If your using dreamweaver to make the page, you can make the image a background in dreamweaver easily and it will load faster.

Hope that helps.

That is going to be one huge image. Poor 56k modem users could be waiting a very long time (like over a minute) just for your background image to load. Even some so called 'hi speed' people will be waiting many seconds.

Maybe you should consider a tile pattern - one smaller image replicates all over the screen.

Hmm, i suggest not making backgrounds for sites. use a normal colour and have cells on top (if your using a webpage editor like dreamweaver that is) but usually its a basic colour. so then it never repeats it self (you know the End of the picture)

but if you do want to. i sugest 1024x768 i think it is. thats the main one used today!

1024x768 is a good size, that's standard now, I think.
