If he is a Football Fan, what about clubbing together to get him a season ticket, or maybe membership to a Golf Club. I had various presents on mine but none of those will help him as I am a her.

If its a family member how about a collage of family pics /or pics of him though-out his years/ other than a gift from your heart , you could just get a card and put lotto tickets inside and wish him luck/ // that sounds so impersonal though
