A Personal Digitial Assistant (PDA) is used to keep your life organized, with address book for your contacts, calendar and to-do lists for your activities, and note taking. In the last couple of years, other features have been added such as Web browsing, instant messaging, text messaging, Bluetooth, and even combining a phone with a PDA that is called "smartphone."
Palm Zire 71 is a basic PDA, and older model made by Palm. While it is a great PDA, it does not include all the bells and whistles of today's "best of" PDA. You will not be able to use the Zire 71 as a phone, or even text messaging.
You may want to upgrade to either of the following latest Palm handheld:
- Tungsten T/X (about $299)

- LifeDrive (about $399)

I upgraded to a LifeDrive, which offers a 4 GB hard drive (for plenty of storage space), built-in WiFi (for Internet access at hotspots locations), Bluetooth (for easy integration with a Bluetooth phone), built-in voice recorder (for memos), an a gorgeous large screen.
The LifeDrive is Palm's "latest and greatest" handheld, but a new one should be released in the coming months.
If your needs are basic, I would upgrade to a Palm Z22:

The Palm Z22 is a great PDA, but does not offer much expansion. It retails for about $99.
The choice depends on your needs and budget.

P.D.A is short for Personal Data Assistant. A P.D.A is any handheld device (such as the Palm Zire) that allows you to input and store data. The Palm Zire is not able to be used as a cellular phone. The Palm Treo can though. To use the Palm Zire 71, refer to your user manual.
