Yes - Lightning can strike on or near a wire on the phone line and the loud POP can damage your ear. Phone system is grounded so it is an easy path to ground.

Also it can strike on or near a power line and cause a voltage spike. This spike can come into your house. If electronic equipment is turned off, the spike should stop at the wall,(more or less) how ever if it is on, the surge can follow the wire into your system thru the power supply and on to the mother board.

Surge protectors do very well but none of them can take a direct hit from lightning and live. In really bad thunderstorms, shut down your electronics.

As for the computer odds are you cant get shocked but yes it could damage ur computer if a power outage occures.

Get a wireless computer connection and a wireless phone.
If you have a laptop...use battery power during the storm and you can happily chat away without worry.
