in the original Hans Christian Anderson, the mermaid fell in love w/ a prince she saved from drowning. she went to the sea witch, said she would give her legs, but it would feel like hot knives every time she took a step. the mermaid didn't care...and the witch said she would take her voice in exchange. the mermaid said "how can i make him fall in love w/ me w/o my beautiful voice?" and the seawitch said "use ur beauty to get him."
she went ashore, and the prince didn't recognize her, but he did like her cuz she was beautiful. but he was always looking for the "mysterious woman" who saved him. one day he met a young princess, and he thought she was the one who saved him. the mermaid was hearbroken. eventually the mermaid's sisters cut off all their hair in exchange to get their sister back.. but the witch gave them a knife that she had to kill the prince with. the mermaid tried, but couldn't do it because she loved him too much. she killed herself instead! but the spirits came and said she would never die, and she would always be a spirit, and the white foam on the water represented her sacrifice.
*but in the Disney movie, King Triton (her father) understands she truly loves Eric and he turns her into a human again! and she's sooo happy and they looove eachother forever! :)

The way I remember it is this, but I have given you a link with the story...
Hans Christen Anderson wrote the story. She gave up her voice in hopes the prince would fall in love with her as a human or she would become sea foam
The prince fell in love with another woman despite what she did and to get her to come back to the sea, her sisters gave up their hair.
The mermaid was supposed to kill the prince and his wife but she couldn't do it.

She couldn't go back into the ocean ever again or she would lose her legs forever and be returned to Mermaid form.

Her voice was the cost. And everytime she took a step, it felt like a thousand needles was stabbed into her foot.

She paid the price of her entire lifestyle, her family, her friends, her entire way of life...that is a very steep price to pay.

her voice. Also, when she walked it was like knives piercing her feet. Plus, if the prince didn't fall in love with her, she would die.
