My Boyfriend and I got into this discussion somehow and both of us got answers ( I got off the web and he got it off the #311 info line) and still the answer is not solid because both of us got different answers. What I got off the web is that it is ok to own one in NY and he called and got that they are prohibited. Does anyone know the most current information on this?

Ferrets are prohibited within the borders of New York City.

However, they are legal within the rest of New York State.

The state of NY legalized ferrets!

However, New York City bans ferrets... as long as you do not take the ferret into New York City then you should be fine!

"" Ferrets are legal in 48 of the United States and illegal statewide in California and Hawaii. Local laws (such as city or county) can choose to follow state guidelines, or can provide a stricter law. For this reason, many counties or cities in states where ferrets are legal have their own laws that may ban or restrict ferrets, such as New York City, Washington D.C., and Dallas, Texas. ""

Here is the site I got it from: http://www.cypresskeep.com/Ferretfiles/Legal-PPN.htm

I do not think so. I lived in Arizona for 10 years and they are legal there and from what I remember most of the ferrets there were shipped in from NY., check it out though.

My understanding is that technically they aren't illegal, but that the Health Department
has declared them a public health hazard and enforces their seizure and destruction.
Supposedly there is a license you can get.
