The device cannot be more than 6 inches by 6 inches and we cannot use any kind of parachute. The egg will be dropped about 20 feet. There are no conditions about what materials can be used.

How about a 6x6 cardboard box packed tightly with a soft foam material...or peanuts...or bubble wrap...I think the foam would be the best though...Or use a container that will not break and fill it with water and put the egg inside it.

How about using a 6 inch by 6 inch cardboard box and stuff it with foam (like memory foam) so that the egg is nestled in the middle.

The force that the egg feels when it hits the floor is equal to the change in momentum divided by the time the whole impact takes. It is derived by Impulse= Force times Time = (change in)Mass times Volume.
Since mass or volume can't be affected in an impact, divide by Time on each side and Force = Change in momentum divided by time.
In the end, just add to the amount of time it takes for the egg to hit the ground.

A type of air pillow or very light box which will expell air and absorb impact when the egg hits, like stunt men do in a long fall.

You could put the egg in a kind of "basket", and then suspend the basket from a solid box frame using rubber bands or springs or such. Make sure the frame os bottom-heavy so it falls properly.

Many small balloons inside a ZipLock bag, then wrapped with Saran Wrap to keep in place. Don't blow up the balloons to full, but stuff around the egg.

i've done this one before! the egg that won was wrapped in heaps of straws....but it also had a paper parachute.

my guess is that a mixture of water and mash patatos something that receives shock but does not return shock after it hits
