Sounds like you have a little fungus growing in warm wet spots. I get that too and just wipe it away with a kleenex or damp sponge. It is not harmful to the fish as it is not in the water.

Usually it starts on a flake of food that did not find its' way into the tank. Good question.

the answer above mine is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. The white stuff is whit algae which grows because too much light is hitting the tank. If you have it in front of a window that will happen or if you have the light on for too long that will happen. If you had done alot of water changes it wouldnt have time to build up so that algae wouldnt be there.

Sounds like you're doing too many water changes. Should only be changing 20% of the water once a week. Let it go for a few weeks before doing another water change, then change as above.

You could use either snails, or a suckerfish. I call it that, but it's not the real name. It's an algae eater. The pet store person will know when you ask for it.

get a snail but don't get a male and a female in the same tank they will reproduce like crazy and they will just suck it all off and when it comes back they will keep sucking it off it works trust me i have done it before.
