i think it's George Harrison but someone said eric clapton wrote it and gave it to GH as a birthday present. I think this is total crap and i think EC is only involved in the actual recording of the song. Can anyone set the record straight?

It was written by George Harrison, and Eric Clapton played lead guitar on the album version of the song.

The definitive answer is found in the book, "The Beatles as Musicians - Revolver through the Anthology" by Walter Everett. Heavy book with a lot of music theory. Basically, George found the lyric "gently weeps" in a poem. When the Beatles were recording "The White Album, they were not talking to each other and used this recording time to do there own projects. George asked Eric to "do some guitar work" on my song. Eric told George, "I can't be on a Beatles record". George told Eric not to worry about it. Paul McCartney concurs as saying, "The White Album" was not a Beatles album.

George Harrison and the Beatles have copyright.

I can't prove anything, but, frankly, I think someone heard the story behind Layla, twisted it a few times, and came up with this one.

this is all my opinion, but Clapton knew enough by that time to KNOW what the copyright of a great song was worth. He might have offered it to Harrison and/or the Beatles to play - but as an out-and-out gift - i can't believe that.

Hope this helps:

George was at this time enthralled with reading I Ching, and decided to apply its principles of chance into his writing. While at his parents' home, he picked a book from a shelf, and told himself that he would write a song based on the novel's first words. They were "gently weeps," thus he wrote this song around and with those words. The famous guitar solo herein was played by Eric Clapton, then a member of the group, Cream. It was recorded on September 5 and 6, 1968

It was written solely by George Harrison, but Clapton played lead guitar (with a Les Paul) on the album version.

I look at you all see the love there that's sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
I look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping
Still my guitar gently weeps

I don't know why nobody told you
How to unfold your love
I don't know how someone controlled you
They bought and sold you

I look at the world and I notice it's turning
While my guitar gently weeps
With every mistake we must surely be learning
Still my guitar gently weeps

I don't know how you were diverted
You were perverted too
I don't know how you were inverted
No one alerted you

I look from the wings at the play you are staging
While my guitar gently weeps
As I'm sitting here doing nothing but aging
Still my guitar gently weeps

The last time I checked which was just now when I read this - its credited to George Harrison and its credited to him in every book I've ever read where its mentioned. Safe bet....George wrote it.
