Traditionally, an off-white or beige works, but what else is in the dining room? Dark furniture would suggest a lighter color is needed, blues and greens are restful, any of a range of oranges or yellows would add a warmer feeling to the room. Is it wainscoted? You might want to try a patterned wallpaper to create a mood, such as latticework on blue for a Mediterranean or Italian effect of open-air dining.

I found this very beautiful color... I don't exactly know the name.. but it was like a medium pale peach... for my dining room... it was so natural with my wooden dining furniture. And there are so many patterns that have that light amberish glow in them that balances the harshness of darker woods... very beautiful.
you could also put in a chair rail... about 30 inches above the floor level.. running around the perimeter of the room.. then wall paper below it... very nice.

If you're going with the farm house theme, I would either go with true red and white with a country-style border, or a dusty blue. If you're going more with the elegant, I would do a creamy, buttery yellow. Just my opinion.

Red. Red is always a good color for a living room. It's bright and it goes with every occasion

a brick-red or maybe an off-white/cream color. If you want to go for a "vintage" look you could try wallparper too
