Yes! In fact my spouse and I have done this to some extent by living and working overseas for many years. However since our work is not related to business or economic development we find that financially it has been a huge sacrifice and challenge and continues to be so, almost to the point where we feel it is taking too great of a toll. It is a shame that to live alternatively is so difficult that few will choose it and fewer can maintain it over the long term.

I so much regret all the obligations I've created for myself by trying to live the American dream. If I could turn back the clock I would by a parcel of land in the wilderness and escape the rat race. How different would we be if so much of our energy was not focused on paying the bills and attaining more and more to show everyone how successful we are? The earth provides us with all we need to survive. Why do we need so much more? Have you ever noticed that people who require less to be satisfied are generally much nicer people than most?

I associate self-sufficiency with living on some farm, or remote piece of property. I enjoy the country, but I'm far too urban to live in it. I'd like to be self-sufficient, in the sense that I earn enough $ to support myself, and I might even grow a little pot in the backyard, but I don't want to grow my own tomatoes. Word Up!

yes, i thought about it seriously for years.
...however, i just don't have the time, and i find my fulfillment and freedom from this world in Jesus now.
...not that living self-sufficiently is bad, but i no longer feel the need to and i have too many other irons in the fire

Right now, it may be necessary for long term survival.
I'm not afraid of dying. Though living is helpful.
