1st, I admit my ignorance on this. So what's the facts? Are USA companies forced by law to keep a racial / ethnic / gender balance? Some states? All? None? Never worked human resources, so I don't know. Got links? Thanx...

Thanx bostonianinmo. So, I see...no quotas...but then if the workforce is not representative of the population at the locale, then the company could easily be accused of discrimination. Thus, the pressure is there anyway, if I might extrapolate a little.

No, they are not required to maintain any particular mix in their workforce. Most companies do track statistics to see if their workforce is representative of the poplulation where they operate. Some companies do have affirmative action programs but this is a matter of choice for the company.

The only legal condition is that they do not discrimminate based on certain non-merit factors such as race, creed, color, or national origin. Some non-merit factors are protected in some jurisdictions but not in others. A good example of that is sexual preference.
