If you are worried about your dog feeling left out when the baby arrives that's understandable. The baby will always come first however you must look after your dogs needs too. It's easy enough not to have to put one first over the other. While the baby is awake and needs attention you do whatever he/she needs. When the baby sleeps you can sit down and relax and cuddle the dog. When the dog needs walking take the baby out too, it's good for the baby to get fresh air and so you can do both at once. As the baby gets bigger you'll be able to play with both at the same time, the baby will love to play with the dog and the dog will be getting attention and it will bring them both closer to each other so there will be no feeling of rejection.

You know bobby I can understand why you would ask this question. I am a woman and I love animals. I have a pet dog and I love her like she is my baby right now. I do not have any kids yet, but I want to one day and of course my kids would come first. It sounds like this is your first baby. The problem is you just do not understand yet since the baby is not born yet. Once you look into your baby's eyes, you will know what is most important.
It is easier for a woman to understand the love for her baby right after pregnancy since she carries the baby. Since you do not have to carry the baby it is a different feeling for you. Hopefully, that feeling will change once your baby is here. I sense some fear in your question. DO not let people tell you that you will be a bad father. You can be a good father if you want to. I think you know what is right.

What sort of question is that? Are you really being serious?? A baby always comes first!! And I think you were really brave in adopting a dog you dont know anything about and bringing it into a house where a new baby will be

If the dog feels abandoned and left out may get jealous and attack baby... If the dog still gets lots off attention and shown the baby and that you still love dog too then dog may be good protector of baby.
Note the first sentenace in that... and thats more so with small dogs...
let the dog stay in with you in bedroom.
Ask vets for advice... ideally you want the dog to see the baby as a puppy who needs looking after and that the dog has the job of defending the family not dumped.

A dog is an animal. It was created, physiologically designed to be more self sufficient. Give it room to walk around, set food out for it, water also and it should be just fine. Don't ignore it completely but the simple care of the "independant" dog should not come before the care of an infant who cannot walk around on its own, or get it's own food and nutrients. It would be wrong and a poor parenting choice to choose the dog over a helpless baby.

In both human and dog social groups there is a hierarchy and a pecking order. Of course, for us, the human is always first and however much we love our dog he should always be at the bottom of that order. Even when we have visitors to the home, the dog drops down further to the bottom and is always last. He will accept that as normal if it is firmly but lovingly reinforced.

Why are you even asking this question. Your baby should come first every time. That does not mean you should neglect your dog but that you should treat him as a pet and not as your child.

are you really that crazy? you compare a beautiful baby to a dog??? your child should ALWAYS comes first no matter what you are their source of survival and their way of life, so your baby should come first and always comes first, icant beleive you would ask that question. the baby cant go and eat some where or go to the bathroom on its own and cant survive without you, i have a daughter and she is my first concern for life.
