DirecTV has the largest customer base, however Dish Network is the faster growing company, and has been for the past six years. With the exception of High Definition channels (HD), they offer nearly identical channel lineups. On average Dish is a little cheaper (especially if you have 3 or 4 tv's you want to hook up), and it also offers a dual DVR without any up front cost for the receiver. DirecTV charges $100 up front for their single DVR, but offers a $100 mail in rebate, so it still ends up being free (but only offers DVR on one tv). Dish Network also offers more local channels in more areas than DirecTV does. If you want to do HD programming, Dish Network is definitely the way to go. They currently offer over twice as many HD channels as DirecTV.
Most of DirecTV's new customers are signing up for one of two reasons. 1) - They want the NFL Sunday ticket (only offered by DirecTV) which allows them to view every NFL game on Sundays ($280 a season).
2) - They have a friend or family member that has it, and they decide to get the same thing.
In an area where both DirecTV and Dish Network offer your local channels, I would get Dish Network. Dish set up twice as many new customers last year, and will most likely pass DirecTV in total customers in the next year or two. With the advantage in price, local channels, DVR's, and HD channels, Dish Network is the superior company for new satellite tv customers (unless you want NFL Sunday ticket).

i think boone-platoon hit the nail on the head. I used to install both directv and dish network. The headache of installing dish network is insane, and if you choose to move a box with in the house it usually requires a service call to do so because of the dual tuner(2 rooms one box). As with directv all you have to do most of the time is to use a jumper to make the cable longer to reach where you would like it to go.

Personally I'v had all three. Cable costs the most but I like it better. Just better pictuer on HD shows. Between Direct TV and Dish. Well DIsh is cheaper...HOWEVER CHEAPER DOES NOT MEAN BETTER! We had a lot of issues with Dish. Moved to Direct TV (payed a bit more) but enjoyed it a lot better.

i have Dish Network at home and they have Direct TV at work, both of them are good, for the pricing Dish is alot cheaper, especially if you want to get HD receiver dish would be about 300 cheaper if you want to get an HD DVR reciever, and its also cheaper for regualar service, the only thing thats direct TV have better then Dish is that you can only get NFL league pass(if you are a football fan) with direct TV,

Directv all the way........Dish "nowork" has the most rediculous installation set up from a technical stand point.......why would would want one reciever that controls 2 different tv's in your house...oh..to save 5 bucks? you can spend 5 bucks on a value meal at any fastfood place...... Everytime i have to reinstall a Directv customer that went to Dish.....its nothing but a big headache to undue the mess of wiring that Dish does.....its horrible.....even down to the way Dish networks dish looks installed on your house.....like a droopy lollipop....ughhh.... Dish network is cheaper, but you get what you pay for. Dish "nowork" has us beat with Hispanic programming, but thats it....., drive around your own neighborhood and count the number of Directv dishes compared to Dish Network dish and you decide..........exhale....... find my happy place..................

Definitely Dish.
Dish has cheap PPV, great packages, GREAT music channels (Siruis), tons of channels, great reception, and is really, really cheap. The bill is very easy to read, also.
