Yes, Italians are Latin. Historically, the Latin culture and language origined in Italy. Though, the term Latino means any country that speaks a Latin language. In Europe, if you say,"Latino" Europeans think of Latin Europe: Italy, Romania, Spain, Portugal, and France.

The U. S. has a screwed up definition of Latino and Hispanic. The terms Latino and Hispanic are commonly interchangeable in the U.S. Basically, someone who speaks Spanish and/or anyone south of the border.

As for the Italians being Hispanic, no. The word "Hispanic" derives from the ancient Roman word "Hispania." Which Hispania was given to the Iberian Peninsula [modern day Portugal, Spain, and Gibraltar]

In reality, Hispanic is anyone who speaks Spanish or Portugese, and Latino encompasses all Latin speaking countries like Latin Europe and Latin America.

It's best to go by the person's nationality. In Latin Europe and Latin American countries the word Latino has less connotation for race. To classify Latino or Hispanic as a race is impossible, because many countries speak a form of Latin including the West coast of Africa and a few Asian Islands. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romance_languages

The question sounds funny but I get what you're saying. Italians are europeans (just like Chinese and Japanese are asians).

But to keep it simple, let's just say Italians are Italians.

Italians are Italian or European. If they are from Rome, you could call them Roman.

italians dont have a polite slang for them except for as mentioned , italian or european...although european can be almost anything so its not very straight forward when talking about them that way...easier just to call us italian (italiano or italiana works too)
