u need to get him some hamster food because that needs to be his main diet. he can have other things in addition to that but u need that for sure. they love fruit and can have it daily (no citrus) in small portions - apple, banana, cantaloupe, grapes, etc. just dont give them too much wet fruit/veggies a day. no iceberg lettuce! too watery. no celery-no nutrients and watery. they like any kind of nuts but use sparingly.

I've had a lot of hamsters over the years.I recently read in a hamster book that you can give them cooked meat. But a very small, because they will store anything that they don't eat right away. You can give them fruits and veg.again a very small amount .Uncooked spaghetti noodle. but it is preferable that hamster food be given on a regular basis.but it doesn't hurt to give them other things for variety.they also like to eat grass, dandelions and California Poppy's.I once gave a small slice of watermelon to a family of seven hamsters they cleaned it during the night to the rind and then some. Hamsters also like clover.AND they love sesame seeds ,unsalted of course.

In an emergency, you can use something like cheerios as a substitute, but you shouldnt feed such stuff to them as a diet. Go to walmart and get some feed, they're open 24hrs, and the hamster food is very cheap there.

I have fed all of my rodents on a very well ballanced diet, it varries from what we have on hand. But this link will give you an idea of what you can try: http://www.dapper.com.au/articles.htm#diet
Also try googling rodent diet or rat diet. Look for pet rat-specific sites that will give you a good listing of foods. Good luck!
