I go to the movies to analyze them not for the mindless entertainment. I go to see what they can contribute to our society and what we can learn from them. I rate all movies that I watch on a 5 star system;

One star for story line. Doesn't matter if it is an old story new story, repeat or retell of a story. It is how well the story line was written.

One star for casting. Good or bad casting can make or kill any story. Can't you just tell when some other actor would have been so much better in a certain role?

One star for directing. A good director can make or kill any actor's ability in any story line.

One star for soundtrack. Sometimes I will go to a movie just for the soundtrack ( and I usually buy the soundtrack before the movie comes out).

One star for cinematography, which includes anything else like special effects, camera angles, editing, etc.

So go to the movies. Go to all the movies, and build your own rating system and let the film makers know what you like. Read the book-A YEAR AT THE MOVIES: One Man's Filmgoing Odyssey by Kevin Murphy

I would say it really depends on the genre. For example, Indy Horror can get away with a lot lower calibre acting then a coming-of-age drama and still be enjoyable.

There are some fundamentals though, needed for all movies. Like good cinematography and editing, lighting and effects, the technical side of filmmaking. Also, the basics of good story telling. Keeping the audience's attention is important, and compelling characters that viewers can relate to and care about. Then viewers can feel the conflicts that the charcaters are faced with. The essence of drama is conflict.

plot, good writing.
I think that's why I like a lot of old black and white films; the writing was so good. It had to be because back then they didn't have special effects and didn't usually shoot scenes outside a Hollywood or New York set.

Well firstly, suspense does it for me, more than any other genre. To answer your question, I'd say casting and plot are key.

A happy audience.

What goes into a film is nothing if the audience doesn't like it.
