This could have several reasons. Not every Recordset is updateble. Maybe you try to update a recordset that based on two tables or you have opened the recordset as readonly

if you are using Access as your back end, make sure that your cursor is set to "Client Side" if not it will yell at you. Also make sure its set to "Snapshot" or "Dynaset" and that you are using an updateable query as your datasource.
