The responsibility, the mentoring, the example you need to set for others, the living up to the expectations of others, the "many hats" you need to wear, the line you can never cross of business vs. friendship, the paperwork (can sometimes be overwhelming), just the role you are leading reflects on all the people you manage. They count on you to the point of almost being perfect. When you stress out, break down or burn out, they can easily loose respect for you. Without the respect of the people you are managing, you have nothing. It's hard to be nice to them without crossing that ever so thin line. You need to treat each fairly or you will cause of riff between the Indians over favoritism

in the united states the 2 roles i like least is prohibition from beating thieves, and not being allowed to horse whip lazy employees. any value destroyer should be fired on the spot, but bleeding heart liberals, arm backed bureaucrats, and worthless politicians protect the worthless and help promote the destruction of true value producers for their own vain-glory.
just doesn't make sense how they stay in power...

I'm not a manager yet, but I studied management for awhile. One of the many bad parts of the job, is decide wether or not to fire someone. And a tough question is, what to do with the person, whose performing badly, if you don't fire her.

Putting out the fires and confrontation.

I hate having to fire/lay off/hire people. That process of progressive counciling to interviews, the whole thing is a waste of my time.
