This may have happened to you, I installed windows XP once and it didnt install the mouse driver right. If its a PS/2 mouse I would consider getting a USB mouse.

When a mouse goes flaky, it is usually because of an accumulation of lint and stuff on the tiny rollers inside. If you cleaned them off and it still doesn't work, buy a new mouse, they can be inexpensive.

You haven't told the problem exactly. Does the mouse doesn't work at all or is stopping in between. You said you cleaned it well. Does it moves in jerks or doesn't work at all? Try this. Switch off. Remove the mouse. Reconnect and switch on.

Try going to: Start > Control Panel > Mouse, and try adjusting the settings.

Have you checked the "device driver" to see if it is working properly?
Right-click on My Computer
click Properties
click the Hardware tab
Right-click on the mouse icon
click Properties
that will tell you if it is working properly.

You might need to find a different driver, or just upgrade the one you are using. I had a problem like that once, and that took care of it.
