AVG Anti-Virus, it has superb virus protection, good updating engine, and superb email monitoring...
I use Avast Pro, any anti-virus is going to hog resources for the "Real time Protection" they must in order to protect PC, but AVG will work for you if you want Free, the old saying " you get what you pay for"....
Good Luck

I am using Norton but you can also use Kaspersky antivirus. It is a good antivirus program. McAfee also works.
Most free alternatives do not work well or you have to pay for removing the viruses. There is absolutely no reason to make the program good if it distributed for free.
Your computer may be running slow because of the viruses you got while surfing the internet without antivirus software. In your case it is almost impossible to get rid of all the viruses and you should probably reinstall the Operating system and install the antivirus software BEFORE going to the internet. Windows firewall is not going to protect you.
Do not run Avast and get rid of it as fast as possible. No free software is going to offer sufficient protection.
I used to have a similar problem after downloading free antivirus. It turned out that my computer was infected with several thousand viruses. I reinstalled the OS and the antivirus protection before I started using Internet and everything worked fine.

Can't help with your specific problem, tho' I know there are some sites out there that claim to have free anti-whatever programs that are really themselves viruses or at least virus like.
Check out this month's edition of Consumer Reports, they have a good article about anti-virus, anti-spam, etc programs, both free ones and non-free ones.
I have McAfee which I get free from Comcast, my ISP. Other ISPs also offer free anti-virus software. I also use Ad-Aware, SpyBot-Search and Destroy, and Microsoft's Windows Defender -- all of these are free, and none slow down my computer. There's other good stuff out there, too, just make sure to get a recommendation!

AVG Anti-Virus is the absolute pinacle of free anti-virus technology. It has found viruses and trojans that McAfee and Norton have missed!
I would strongly recommend it.
However if you live in Canada and your ISP is Telus, you have a free subscription to their Security Services, which comes with Anti-Virus and it is fairly good.

AVG
Beats the pants of most commercial Anti Virus progs and the home edition is free, and runs fairly quietly in the background.
