An American history book will give you a much better answer than this forum.

As for definitions of what the parties stand for, the definition for Republican has greatly changed over the past 6 years, and many long standing principles have been turned on their heads. The Democrats have moderated from their more liberal days of the 1960's.

Republicans will likely not give you an honest explanation on their demographics and geographic distribution because some of the shifts from Democrat to Republican were due to racism. The Northern Democrats of the 1950's and 1960's supported integration and civil rights for blacks. Many white Southern Democrats of the era resented this and became Republicans. You will note that 92-93% of US blacks are Democrats, irrespective of which region they live in. They suspect the Republicans of being racist and of being pro-wealthy, anti-middle and working class.

I looked at Wikipedia and it was very long, and somewhat biased. Britannica.com has a good 4 page description of the parties, and these are not full pages. As you probably know it's subscription only, but they have a free trial subscription available.

I'm assuming that you're looking for a good, basic explanation, that's why I mention length. Britannica has the most accuracy and shortest length. Good luck!

Basic ideologies define both. Republicans lean toward a free society and Lockean theory, Democrats lean toward the "equality" of socialism and Aristotelian theory. Can't give you an answer on South versus North voting the way they do. Better marketing in one area than the other?
