Does the motor crank over fast or slow? If slow, remove the spark plugs and retest. If you have spark back, you have a voltage issue. Could be the starter using too many amps, not leaving enough for the ign till you turn off power to the starter.
Back in the late 60's to the early 70's Johnson/Evinrude used several different ign systems. Does yours have the spark plug leads coming out from under the flywheel with a box on the right side that has Motorola on it? If so, make sure the voltage to the box stays above 10.5 volts when cranking, if not we need to get it there.
Or is the a box on the side with 10 wires going to it and 3 coils, 1 for each plug? Then we have a different issue.
Let us know.

I think that's my favourite question out of all the others! Thank you... :-))))) Well, in today's world a single drop of tear can't flood when I actually think it should. And the reason for this is that everyday there is the spilling of blood which should be creating a Tsunami but it never occurs because people are becoming more and more selfish! Others pain is invisible to our eyes as well as our hearts! Starvation is causing so many deaths and this should be causing an earthquake but yet again it doesn't!!! Yet, take my words that a note can make the whole world sing! Music and the arts are the most powerful weapons as the saying goes: The pen is mightier than the sword. Well it is the same with music. Our united voice should ring a single note and that's the one of Compassion! We should be caring for one another and make this world a better place for all of our kinds + of course other living things! Alas, I don't hear that ringing in my ears; only an out of tune sound scattering the melodious peace and tranquility I dream of...A dream I'm not giving up on so soon! Thank you truly!!! :-)

how many HP? and cylinders. I have a 1975, 85 hp evinrude, and it
won't start. I am so pissed. it could be the power pack, or on of the thing that goes straight from the little pack to she spark plug.
damn, can't think right now what its called. but the get old and crack. them moisture sets in and they're shot. I had 2 replaced.
do you have a manual? cause I can tell you where to go online to get good prices on parts.
Wayne e-mail me if yo want.

If there is a ballast resister to the ignition you could get spark from there.
Cranking bypasses the resister and if that circuit is open you would not have spark.

It probably is the points but this is another place to look.

Check he points for a clean contact point and proper gap set the points on the high point of the lobe and use a 0.019 " feeler gauge and set the gap and then try to see if you have spark.

You either have a bad ignition switch, starter solenoid, or a wiring problem.

Most likely your ignition switch is bad , replace it and try again, if that don't work , have your whole electrical system checked.

change the power pack, when you old wiring fell apart it more then likely shorted the power pack.
