x = number of female guppies
2x = number of male guppies
He have away half of each. So, x/2 male and x female remains.
x + x/2 = 60.
3x/2 = 60
x = 40
2x = 80
He had 120 guppies (40 female, 80 male)

Let:
x = # of female gupies
y = # of male gupies
at first:
2x=y
He gave away half the female gupies (x/2) and an equal number of male gupies (x/2)
so now:
# Female gupies = x - x/2
# male gupies = y - x/2
If he has 60 left then:
60 = x - x/2 + y - x/2 = y
since 60= y and 2x=y, then x=30, y =60
Let's double check:
Started with twice male than female (30 F and 60 M) OK
Gave away half female and same number of male, then left with 60 (now 15F and 45M) OK
So:
a) the ratio of female to female = 1
(if a) was a typo, ratio of female to male is 1:3)
b) he has 60 left: he had 90 to begin with

a) So easy! Its 1:2. He gave away HALF already told you the answer.
b)
2:1=4:2
2/2=1
4-1=3
3+1=4
4u=60
1u=15
4+2=6
6u=90
He had 90 guppies at first, girl.

Process listed above is correct, but still can be defined in one variable, it is easier than working in two.
