I've thought about this question a lot, and I still don't have a good answer. I mean, which would you rather be: a nice person who is thought of as a jerk...or a jerk who is thought of as a nice person? I mean, we all know people who are far worse than others perceive them to be...and we don't like them.
So the bottom line is, which is more important? Being nice or being thought of as nice? I'd like to say being nice...but I think I'd be really depressed if I were and no one thought I was. Which means that I really do care about people /thinking/ I'm nice.
So I guess I'm nice because I want something...I want people to think of me as nice :)

I am generally a "nice" person. The golden rule and all. But aside from that, being nice is just easier and less full of angst. However, I know that I can be nice to someone that can help me in someway even if that person isn't deserving of it. I believe that everyone has this capacity. If everyone where to TRULY evaluate their every action through life, I think that they would be hard pressed to not find a time when they did just that. Think about your childhood and pleasing your parents. This is learned trait and it carries on to adult life. Even the person that is nice on a regular basis can find that they have gone above and beyond to try and please someone at some time as an adult.

I think everyone expects something in return. There's nothing wrong with that. The "something in return" isn't always tangible. Many expect that whoever they were nice to will be nice in return to them. If you go through life doing favors for and being nice to people because you expect you'll get a large tangible reward though you're bound to be disappointed.

I cannot claim to be nice all of the time but I am definitly not nice to get anything..........
