First you have to convert the fractions to a common denominator. Fortunately, yours will all convert easily into eighths.

17-3/4 equals 17-6/8
9 1/2 equals 9-4/8
plus 8-5/8

totals 34 and 15/8
or 35-7/8

This is solved easily by determining the "lowest common denominator." Start with the fractional part of each number. Looking at the fractions, the denominators are 4, 2 and 8. The lowest common denominator is the one which contains all of the factors of 4, 2 and 8, i.e 2x2, 2, and 2x2x2. Since 8 is made up of 4 and 2, the 4th's and half can be converted to 8th's by multiplying by (4/4) and (2/2), remember, multiplying for 1 does not change the value, Making the problem 17 + 6/8 + 9 + 4/8 + 8 + 5/8. Add the numerators of the fractions to get (6 + 4 + 5)/8ths, making15/8's. Reducing the fraction to lowest terms yields 1 + 7/8. Thus making the problem 17 + 9 + 8 + 1 + 7/8 = 35 + 7/8.

I put in (+) signs instead of spaces for clarity..

First, you must find a common denominator for the fractions. The given denominators of 4, 2 and 8 have 8 as the least common denominator.

Next, you would express each fraction as a fraction with that denominator. Therefore,

3/4 = 6/8 (multiply both numerator and denominator by 2)
1/2 = 4/8 (multiply both numerator and denominator by 4)
5/8 = 5/8 (no change)

Next add the numerators of the fractions together and keep the common denominator of 8, with the results of 15/8 (6 + 5 + 4 = 15 for the numerator).

Simplify 15/8 by dividing 15 by 8, getting 1 with a remainder of 7 which would be expressed as 1 7/8.

Add the whole numbers, 17, 9, and 8 for a sum of 34.

Now, add the whole number 34 and the mixed number 1 7/8 for a sum of 35 7/8

Use common denominators for the fractions. To start 3/4, is 6/8. 1/2 is 4/8. 5/8 already has the right denominator. Adding the fractions, I get 15/8 or 1 7/8. 17+9+8=34

35 and 7/8

17 3/4 changes to 6/8 (you change the fraction to same bottom number 4 x 2, 2 x 4, but you also have to multiply the top number by the number you use on the bottom 3 x 2 and 1 x 4)
91/2 changes to 4/8
8 5/8 stays same

your answer is 34 15/8 this then changes to 1 7/8 so your answer is 35 7/8.

First you need to find a common denominator for the fractions...which is basically a common multiple of 4,2,and 8....that would be 8...then you change the fractions to use the common denominator so now you have:
17 6/8
+ 9 4/8
+ 8 5/8
_________

so that is 34 15/8 that is an irregular fraction so it ends up as:

35 7/8

you've came to the right person :)

first add 17+9+8 together
what do you get.....34

then, find a common denominatior between 3/4,1/2, and 5/8.
since 8ths is the highest and 4ths and halves are a multiple of 8 change everything else into 8ths

3/4=???
denominator first...
4 times what = 8????
4 times (2) = 8!
then numerator....
since 4 times 2 = 8 you have to take the 2 for the numerator.
so 3 times 2 =????
3 times 2= 6
so 3/4 = 6/8!

now to do the other problem.
this will make it easy because it is a half.
1/2 =
4/8
4 is half of 8

NOW....
we have to add
5/8 + 4/8 + 6/8 =????
only add numerators!
5+4+6=15
=15/8

15 is over 8 so we have to make it into a mixed number
15-8=???
15-8=7!

so its 1 7/8

Now, we have to add 1 7/8 to 34

34+ 1= 35...

35 + 7/8= 35 7/8

SO, the answer is 35 7/8

I hope you can understand it now!!!!
