in most cases, the 2nd one is correct, with a comma between "life" and "I".

however, there are some cases where the 1st one would be correct. for example:

"In the course of my life, I had learned that 2+2=5. However, I now know this is not true."

in other words, "I had learned" something before, but now it doesn't work.

however, take this sentence:

"In the course of my life, I have learned many useful and valuable lessons."

in most cases this is the correct way to say it.

Both sentences are correct. It depends on the tone you want to phrase the rest of the text in. The first feels to me like a person reflecting on the past before taking an action in the present. The second seems closer to relaying the knowledge and experience to another party.

They can both be correct depending on if you want to write in the past (had) or in the present (have). As, you are not dead, you are probably wanting the second sentence. But, perhaps, your paper isn't from your perspective.

the verb "have" in the past perfect tence is had to be used with a completed action as in "on tuesday i had a cup off coffee." while the present perfect form of have can be used in the past for a continual action as in "in the course of my life, i have learned..." also in using your sentence it can also be considered in the historical present form
