Im writing a paper on whether or not marijuana should be made legal and i could do it one of two ways:
1) Argue both sides as to why or why not it should be legalized
2)Argue only why it should be legalized.

any suggestions?

If you can think of an equal amount of reasons to argue for each side then I think you should do so. It takes more skill to be able to identify both points of view whilst sticking to your own opinion on the matter and drawing up a conclusion.

I usually made decisions like this based on how much info I had to argue each point as well as however long my teacher required it to be. It depends on if you are supposed to write as purely persuasion, or as an educated argument for one conclusion based on examination of evidence and rebuttals on both sides. Myself, I am more swayed by the approach where an individual has presented both sides to an issue before drawing their conclusion from the evidence presented. You can write a persuasive paper based solely on evidence in one direction, but some of your claims may ring hollow if you do not take into account the rebuttal from the opposition.

sounds like a biased teacher.

anyway, personally, I would argue the 2nd point, but only because it's an issue I feel very strongly about.

read up on the relevant Wikipedia article - really you could write a whole paper using that as a source (remember, don't copy and paste - paraphrase into your own words).

depends on how long the paper is supposed to be...if you don't have enough information to just argue why it should be legalized or just can't think of anything else to right about on that then do both

always show both sides to an arguement, then rebutt the reasons that don't support your cause. it makes your arguement stronger.

guarenteed A that way
