No, it's not that easy. The most common form of worms is roundworms. As adults, the worms live in the intestinal tracts of your pet and usually stay there unless they are vomited up (they look like strings of spaghetti). In another earlier stage of development, you can find them around the anal area, and they resemble pieces of rice. Your pet probably picked them up by eating an animal that already had worms. I'm not saying that it's not impossible to get worms from your pet, but it's not probable. I have 2 cats that I give de-worming medicine about every 2 or 3 months as a preventive measure.
However, in other countries around the world, worms and other parasites are common. The Discovery Channel has a program called EATEN ALIVE that talks about parasites. It's quite interesting, and sort of scary. If you think your pet has worms, then a vet check is needed...not just for your pet's health, but also to put your fears to rest.

kittens and puppies should be dewormed before you get them.. kittens kept indoors (after being dewormed) wont have worms anyhow so its not an issue
if you follow proper hygine its not that easy.. I mean if you are sticking your hand in their poops and then into your mouth - ya you can get worms
but realistically this isnt gonna happen too much
either way all pets should be dewormed

I just called my pediatrician about this. She said that as long as your not coming in direct contact with the wormed feces you're fine.
