Sure, if it was your main hard drive on your old computer then you can use it as your main hard drive on your new computer. It is exactly the same. Even if you get a new hard drive to be the main one, then just install everything on it, and use the old one as a second one and set it to slave. Same old, is same new. No difference.

Depends. You don't say what your operating system is.
Technically, there is seldom a problem with taking a hard drive from one machine and running it as the primary drive in another machine. But if you use that monopoly operating system (Windows), you are trapped. Legally, you can no longer do what used to be a very logical and common thing to do: move your OS to a new machine.
If you take your old hard drive and install it on your new computer (move your existing Windows XP installation to a new computer) that action breaks the Microsoft Corporation EULA (end user license agreement) and triggers registration requirements. Plus, these days, you are quite likely to be accused of having an illegal copy of Windows.
Want to avoid the hassles? Dump Microsoft. One way to do so is to go to http://pclinuxos.com and download a free ISO, burn it, and install Linux rather than Windows!

You can swap hard drives, but if the make & model of motherboard is not exactly the same, you will need to reinstall the drivers for things that may not work, like sound, network, etc.
