Yes it is safe to travel to Botswana or Cape Town. The roads are in good condition and there shouldn't be any problems. How are you planning on traveling to Botswana or Cape Town? I'm guessing by driving??

All you have to do is make sure your doors are locked, seat belts are on, no stopping at night on the side of the road-we have petrol stations etc where you can do that. It will be a great time and i hope you have fun!

Drive safely!!!

Anyway, it is pretty safe, but you need to be aware that crime exists and although the roads are in excellent condition, beware of stopping next to the road unless it is at a petrol (gas) station. Otherwise it is a lovely drive, but can be very hot. Take enough water along when driving through the Kalahari and other isolated places in Northern Cape.

If you are flying, should not be a problem.

It is safe as long as you are vigilant and responsible for your own safety.

I drive on average 12 000 km alone across South Africa every 6 weeks working as a development consultant and I have never feared for my life nor have anyone ever done me harm. I do not and have never carried any type of weapon on me. I am white. I have only been greeted with friendliness and warmth by my fellow countrymen, irrespective of race, creed or language.

And if you want to hear how real South Africans feel, think, etc stream Radio 702 or Cape Talk (maybe more relevant as you want to travel to Cape Town) and listen to our opinions, our different views and our different rainbow accents. Websites:
http://www.702.co.za/onair/tunein/tunein.asp
http://www.capetalk.co.za/onair/tunein/tunein.asp

Come to South Africa, be safe and have a wonderful time.

Botswana I can't speak for, but Cape Town is relatively safer when compared to Jo'burg or Durban. While South Africa is a dangerous place overall, the threats and nervousness are exaggerated. Exercising good common sense will keep you out of trouble. You always have to be on your guard no matter where you are, at home or abroad.
