No one was ever better than Walter Payton. The man was not only a fine athlete, but he was highly responsible off the field, working with Chicago Public Schools to make a difference in the lives of young men on the wrong track. He intervened when a young player freaked out one day and took a hostage. It was Singletary and Payton who went in to diffuse the situation peacefully so that everyone came out safely and the young player got the help he needed. Even the way he died showed a level of dignity we rarely see in this world.

jim brown. this is coming from a 49er fan so im always tempted to choose jerry rice or joe montana, but of all time jim was the best, he averaged 5 yards a carry over his career, one year he averaged 6.4 yards! if hed played in a 16 game schedule he would have easily ran for +2000 yards that season, he would also be the all-time rushing leader if hed stuck around longer. and he did all this with not that much support, his team never had a very good QB, also there wasnt anybody else on his team that could run the ball well, so the other team knew it was going to him. teams would often crowd the line to try and stop him but he would still put up 5 yards a carry

Statistically, I'd have to go with Jerry Rice. He has many more TDs more than even the person in second place. What's amazing is all the other top TD scorers are all running backs with many, many more touches than Rice. In his prime, he was as dominant a player as anyone who has played the game, creating fear and anguish in defenses and defensive coordinators throughout the league. He was also a class guy, a leader, and the hardest working player out there.

and I don't wanna ruffle feathers (or do I?) but Jim Brown is very overated IMO. He was VERY VERY good compared to people he played with, but on an over all scale he just isn't as good. Today guys are bigger, faster, and stronger. He wouldn't be able to run over everyone as he didn back then. He just had the advantage of being larger in a time when many people weren't.
