Obviously there is some disagreement here. I go with those who say yes. I really don't get the loyalty to Ronald Reagan that everyone seems to have. He was not a great president!

The short answer is no.

The long answer:

Al-Qaeda was formed from members of the Mujahideen resistance movement, who were, indeed, fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan. The Mujahideen were, indeed, funded by Presidents Carter and Reagan; however, neither really had a direct role in the creation of Al-Qaeda.

In a simplistic way, on the other had, one could say Reagan indirectly "supported" Al-Qaeda - at the time, we supported any group fighting the Soviets, really. If you read Tom Clancy novels, you'll see references to Mujahideen forces in a positive light (written during the Cold War). Also, we directly contributed weapons to the Mujahideen (to the delight of modern conspiracy theorists), including Stinger missiles.

Not Exactly. Al Qaeda was already there, Reagan basically hired them as mercenaries to fight the Soviets.

The goal was to make the Soviet action in Afghanistan a drain on the Soviet economy. It did eventually work and the Soviets gave up and went home and not long after the USSR fell apart.

When it was over the US abandon Afghanistan and in the chaos after the war Al Qaeda and the Taliban eventually came to control the country.

While Bin Laden fought with the Mujehedeen (who were trained and funded by the CIA to fight the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan), at the time they were considered freedom fighters...ironic, isn't it...

Bin Laden formed Al Qaeda after the Soviets left because he didn't like American Air Force bases in Saudi Arabia; he turned on America and his home country.

Do a little research. Yes it is true. We supported him and supplied him with weapons and training while he was fighting the Russians in Afghanistan. Just like we supported and trained saddam Hussein while he was fighting the Iranians in the 70's. A large number of our troops have been killed by weapons that we supplied to Iraq in an effort to overthrow the government of Iran.
While your at it do a little research on the Bush families ties to the Bin Laden family.

No, Reagan's administration aided and trained Mujahideen to fight Russian expansion into Afghanistan. AQ is just a consequence of that support, it wasn't MEANT to happen. I hope.
