i remember several democrats proclaiming, this can never last, we can't keep up this many troops in iraq, the republicans are just saying we wont' have a draft, but wait til after 04, then they'll have to start up the draft..... Well, it hasn't happened, and what about the tens of thousands of dead americans they said would be the result of the war in iraq, we've been there around 3 years now, and only 2500 dead... ( don't mean that to sound like that's not many, because 1 dead is too many but you have to look at the consequences of not taking out a regime who used and hid wmd's from UN inspectors) 2500 in 3 years is a long way from tens of thousands in the first few months.i think democrats just want our troops to have bad things happen so they will look good and bush and america will look bad because of their hatred and intolerance of bush and other people's opinions.

i guarantee you, i'd never say anything bad about 99.999% of soldiers in iraq, its one or two out of thousands that democrats like to insult, and like i said, they hope the soldiers fail in iraq, while republicans are rooting them on to win, that's why when sodliers come back from iraq they look at media and say, where is all the good things we did being reported at, its sad.

Everyone knows that with a draft the protesters would start to come out with a vengeance. The government does not want that. Its better to have an all volunteer army providing the sole means of income for many. Good jobs would be a detrement to enlistments. Try to understand.

The cheney/bush regime, rather than try to increase the number of troops necessary to do the job in Iraq that they claimed would be a cakewalk, they are avoiding at all costs (read political) by increasing the military through a draft. Instead they are calling up the National Guard to fill the gaps that they ignorantly created by rushing into a war on lies with incomplete planning and totally clueless about cultural and religious issues . It is obvious that they still don't have a clue what they are doing. As far as bad things happening to the troops in Iraq, they were sent with inadequate equipment and support. It this was a war of choice and planned as well as they claimed ... why are soldiers still having to buy their own body armor???? A thug on the streets of any city in the US can get body armor easier and faster than a US soldier can!

It's called prediction. It's not always correct.
But just because there hasn't been a draft yet, doesn't mean there won't be one before this is over.
Not to mention that the primary reason there hasn't been a draft is the military use of stop-loss orders. For those unfamiliar with the term, it basically means the military ignores your contract, and doesn't let you exit when military when they promised you could. Which, while not quite as bad as a draft, it pretty darn close.
Also, the prediction wasn't tens of thousands of Americans dead. Go back and read the original quotes, not the edited versions. There were three predictions, "thousands of Americans dead" (true), "tens of thousands of American casualties" (counting wounded, true), "tens of thousands expected dead" (counting Iraqi civilians, too small by an order of magnitude).

To answer your question: The draft is still far, far away-- and I hope it stays that far way. But it may come much closer if, say, North Korea succeeds in a launching a nuclear strike on Japan; since most of our military resources are now diverted to Iraq, we don't have enough volunteers to defend our allies. Or our homeland, for that matter, against the forces of terroism who actually attacked us before and will again-- none of whom came out of Iraq, for the record, and the chief of whom still roams free. Waa-hoo, we caught Sadaam, too bad Osama's still out there laughing at us-- now, how would the situation be different if we were truly concentrating ALL of our resources towards his capture?

After the Army universally lowered all of the standards and regulations related to entrance there has been no need for a draft. They are having a lot of trouble retaining though. You can thank rummy for the stop- loss though, thats actually the draft in disguise. You asked a loaded question and had no idea what the facts were. Do you always draw a party line and then ask a stupid question?

You are a nut!
Only 2500 dead? Are you kidding? Did you forget to count all the service man and women maimed, or don;t they count to you?
There are times when you have to fight and die to protect your home, and defend your way of life. Iraq was not a real threat to any of them. Saddam had no interest in attacking America. The only thing he wanted to do to America is get our money by selling his oil. Why would he attack his biggest customer?
The sad fact is GWB wanted to be a war president and he knew Iraq was an easy target so he squandered the lives of 2500 Americans on NOTHING. All while ignoring a real threat in North Korea.

They desperatley want ot create a draft but one wont occur because it is political suicide. After Vietnam if any president starts a draft there will be mass draft riots. Karl Rove not Bush is smart enough to realize this but it is still remotely posible

as long as brave supporters like yourself keep joining up we ca hold off on a draft. thats number 1[ i/m kidding i know you're just a talker] , #2 if thay put a draft in place support for the war would drop to near zero![ even you'd stopp running your mouth]... and cheney bush "looks" bad[ too say the least] because he is nothing less than a soldier of satin.....
