There are no short cuts. Learn how to groove first, jam with a certain song you like then slowly build up speed as you go along. My suggestion is you practice first with blues riffs then after that maybe you can move on with more metallic riffs, like shredding. I am self taught and it took me about 1 year to really master the guitar. Don't be afraid if you sound sloppy at first, its normal for all aspiring guitarist. I started at 12 and I am 28 and still doing it. Played with 2 bands. Good luck and more power with your guitar playing. I hope you become an awesome shredder soon.

The best way to learn to play a riff quickly is to write it, then buy a mentronome or a drum machine. You can find one at any local music store. Start off slow, and gradually learn to play the riff faster until you've gotten the speed you want.

Other folks have given some great answers, and I'll add the following:

Practice, *every* *single* *day.* Even if it's only for five minutes, pick up your guitar and play. You'll be amazed at how much better you get in a relatively short period of time. You'll feel like you're getting nowhere for a while, then you'll suddenly break through to something new and cool, and you'll be all inspired again. It's the greatest instrument to play, IMHO.
