Erm.. you don't say what kind of project you have to do. If you just have to make a presentation for a lay audience then yes string/ M-theory would be a good topic, as it's fairly interesting stuff. But if you have to demonstrate actual knowledge of physics then don't touch it with a barge pole; that's masters level stuff at it's easiest. You'd be better off showing a real world application of some elementary stuff; why airbags save lives for example (pressure = force/ area; impulse= ft could be useful equations there).
If on the other hand you have to do an experimental project... depends what you're interested in. You might want to look into something in electronics (eg build a radio?), something involving fluids (eg.... the relative viscosity of golden syrup and marmite or something) or some kind of timing practical to prove a theory or determine a physical constant. Without really knowing any details of your project I'm afraid I can't be of much more help!

Is there a university of college near you? If so I would ask a professor in physics or engineering that question. If they are anything like my profs, then they will be happy to help. There might be something you could do to help out their research. If so they would be able to pay for the project and maybe even pay you a little. But in return you should treat it seriously and do your best work.
No offense to they guy above but string theory is a horrible idea. To truly understand string theory you need graduate level math. If you try to do sting theory odds are it will turn into a book report and you will miss out on what research is really about.
