Not sure but it works like a toothpaste cleanser. You can call P&G and ask them this question and they will answer it. I do know that if you take toothpaste and use it to clean crayon off your wall and the Mr. Clean you get the same effect. Both remove the crayon, one is just more convienent.

I know it has formaldehyde in it, so don't use it anywhere children will be.
