As the others have said, you would need to deposit the funds and wait until the checks has completely cleared processing to access the funds.

I have to ask, however, if you know the person sending the check personally. There is a scam where people will send checks o rmoney orders to others, perhaps to purchase an item advertised on the Internet. They "accidently" write the check for too much money, and they ask the recipient to send the excess funds back to them. Once the recipient does they, they discover that the original check was fraudulent, and now owe the bank for the amount of the check. If you don't know the person sending the check, proceed with caution.

Most banks will hold the funds from a foreign check until it clears. While the process is in progress you will be subject to currency fluctuation. The best place to go would be a large bank with international operations. Look for one that does business in the country the check comes from. They will be able to get you a better exchange rate and will process faster than a bank without operations in the country.

You will have to have an account with a bank here I think. Then it would take a few weeks before you can get the money. Even if the check was from the US it can take a few weeks to clear.

You would have to deposit it to a US bank account -- wait for the check to clear -- then withdraw the money.

In the US, any cash transaction of over $10,000 will be reported to the feds.
