Well some of it is how the doctor cuts the cord...but i talked to my doctor and he said that a lot of it happens when parents are cleaning the cord before it heals and they tend to pull on the cord when they are only supposed to gently clean it. the pulling causes it to be stretched causing the outie.

outies are caused by "umbilical hernias". that just means that there is a hole in the muscle of the abdomen where the belly button is that causes the belly button to stick out. my youngest daughter had one, hers was pretty severe, she had to have surgery to fix it so now she doesn't have an outie any longer. yours may not be that severe, ask your doctor. if my daughter had not had hers repaired there was a good chance that some of her intestines could have become trapped in the hole... and that would have been very bad...

It is the way that doctor cut the cord when you were born. A close cut=innie and a sloppy cut=outie
